Humanity withdraws close to 127,000 cubic metres of freshwater every second — roughly 4 trillion cubic metres a year. That is about 50 Olympic swimming pools every second.
Agriculture accounts for around 70% of all freshwater withdrawals, industry about 20% and households roughly 10%. Water stress already affects some 2 billion people, and demand is projected to outstrip sustainable supply in many regions well before 2050. Groundwater depletion in India, northern China and the US High Plains is among the clearest signals of overuse.

Why this number matters
Water is the resource most likely to constrain food and energy production this century. Seeing consumption at this speed puts droughts and water stress into perspective.
How we calculate it
Global freshwater withdrawals are about 4 trillion cubic metres per year (FAO AQUASTAT), converted to ~126,800 m³ per second. Agriculture accounts for roughly 70% of the total.
